‘On the Ground’ with Lauren Brookes

Being trusted to do your best every day

Emerging Futures publishes regular blogs about all sorts of topical issues. Throughout 2022, we are turning the spotlight on the people who work most closely with our service users. Our ‘On the Ground’ feature gives readers an insight into the diversity of our work and the amazing people who make it happen.

In our third ‘On the Ground’ feature, we sat down with Lauren Brookes, Lead Network Coach in West Sussex. Lauren runs recovery support and brief intervention groups and co-ordinates team work with our partners Change Grow Live. When not at work, Lauren loves spending time with friends and family and hitting the beach as often as she can. She spends her evenings studying and enjoys flower arranging.

What do you like best about your role?

Our team check-in without a doubt. It feels good to touch base with my favourite people. It’s amazing to observe ‘next level’ dedication first hand.

What inspired your passion for helping others?

Prior to working with EF, I worked as a Domestic Violence Advisor for many years. I now use this experience to offer support around domestic abuse to our housing teams. Outside of my role, I still support families in need of essentials after fleeing domestic abuse.

What message do you want to share about recovery?

I know that big calendar events such as Christmas and New Year can feel like a battleground when everyone else seems to be having ‘fun’. My message is: Storms make trees take deeper roots and you have got this.

 Describe EF in three words

Supportive, flexible and compelling.

What do you wish you’d known before joining EF?

I wish I had known it would be this liberating to work for a company that wholeheartedly trusts you will do your best every single day.

What have you learnt since working at EF?

I have learnt to wait for the answer. I’ve learnt to ask rather than tell. I have learnt patience really is a virtue. I feel that I’m able to be more open and honest than ever.
